Nice Fit Interactive Table

Nice Fit Interactive Table

What is Nice Fit?

Nice Fit is an interaction design theory that explores how objects fit together in subtly satisfying ways. This fit framework can be applied to new and existing objects in incidental ways to make them more usable and enjoyable. The Nice Fit table is an example of this: the user experience is enhanced, as the table responds to objects by providing a place for them to fit.

Nice Fit refers to objects that:

  1. Are out of place and are then moved into place;
  2. Have an element of confirmation: ex. sound, light, pressure;
  3. Perform a use incidental to their primary use;
  4. Do not interfere with their primary use;
  5. Use simple, physical interaction;
  6. Have a "tipping point";
  7. Have a repeatable action.
  8. Have a resting, incomplete, and active state.

Vacuum Forming

Process video of Tobias and I vacuum forming three different objects multiple times: a spoon, a milk bottle and a bowl. The bottoms of the latter two were previously cast in alginate, then plaster positives were made from the alginate molds. The spoon is partially embedded in a board of MDF. In some scenes a rubber layer is added over the plaster to scale the overall size; in others a previous plastic vacuum form was re-vacuum formed (as in a copy of a copy, and even a copy of a copy of a copy). All forming was done with a thermoset sheet of ~1mm polystyrene.

Of note: plaster is naturally porous and easily vacuum forms while a plastic shape does not. Also: for enlargements with indentations, the rubber must be punctured with a pin or small drill bit.

  1. Great Video.

  2. The video explains the process really well.
