Nice Fit Interactive Table

Nice Fit Interactive Table

What is Nice Fit?

Nice Fit is an interaction design theory that explores how objects fit together in subtly satisfying ways. This fit framework can be applied to new and existing objects in incidental ways to make them more usable and enjoyable. The Nice Fit table is an example of this: the user experience is enhanced, as the table responds to objects by providing a place for them to fit.

Nice Fit refers to objects that:

  1. Are out of place and are then moved into place;
  2. Have an element of confirmation: ex. sound, light, pressure;
  3. Perform a use incidental to their primary use;
  4. Do not interfere with their primary use;
  5. Use simple, physical interaction;
  6. Have a "tipping point";
  7. Have a repeatable action.
  8. Have a resting, incomplete, and active state.

Table Construction

Miter jointing the frame on the shop table saw.

We laminated layers of birch ply to create the frame. This is an inside view of the attachment lip.

The four frame joints were glued and strapped overnight. Legs positioned for next step.

Previous table surface tests. Includes the sand-blasted plexi sheet that the urethane was cast on.

Typical (mis)arrangement of our work area.

Process posted in our work area in the Industrial Design studios at Emily Carr University.

Testing arrangements of objects on the table surface.

Wiring and pneumatic ‘plumbing’ on the table underside. Includes an Arduino microcontroller, Vex Robotics pneumatic kit, brass L joints and a Parallax RFID reader.

  1. That be some fine tabling…
